Collaborative robots are designed to interact closely with humans in a common workspace.The collaborative robot was invented in 1996 by professors J. Edward Colgate and Michael Peshkin of Northwestern University in Illinois. There is a 1997 US patent describing a collaborative robot that is "a device and method for direct physical interaction between a human and a computer-controlled universal robot.
